Towels are an indispensable part of our daily lives. However, incorrect usage and maintenance can cause them to become stiff, lose their color, and lose absorbency in a short amount of time. We have compiled 10 important tips you should follow to keep your towels as soft and vibrant as the day you bought them.
First Wash is Crucial Always wash new towels before their first use. This removes the chemicals on the towels and opens up the fibers. Avoid using fabric softener during the first wash.
Correct Washing Temperature When washing towels, follow the instructions on the label. Generally, a temperature of 40-60°C is ideal for towels. Very high temperatures can damage the fibers and cause colors to fade.
Don't Overload the Machine Do not overfill the washing machine with towels. Allowing the towels to move freely inside the machine ensures they are cleaned and rinsed more effectively.
Be Careful with Fabric Softeners Fabric softeners can coat the towel fibers, reducing their absorbency. Instead of softener, you can use white vinegar as a natural softener. Adding a small amount of white vinegar to the softener dispenser helps keep your towels soft.
Wash Whites and Colors Separately Wash white towels separately from colored ones. This prevents color transfer and keeps your white towels from yellowing.
Avoid Using Bleach Chlorine-based bleaches can damage towel fibers and shorten their lifespan. For stains, you can opt for oxygen-based bleaches.
Follow Drying Instructions When drying towels, use a low or medium-heat drying program. Excessive heat can cause fibers to become stiff. If possible, air-drying your towels will also yield better results.
Don't Over-Dry Removing towels from the dryer when they are still slightly damp helps them maintain their softness. You can then lay them flat to let the remaining moisture dissipate.
Proper Storage Method Store your towels only after they are completely dry. Damp towels can lead to bad odors and the growth of bacteria.
Replace Towels Periodically The ideal lifespan for towels is approximately 2-3 years. After this period, their absorbency decreases, and they may lose their hygienic properties. Replacing old towels is important for both your health and comfort.
